Religious and Social Role of the Sanctuary of Leżajsk

Summary: Centres of religious cult have undoubtedly played an important role in the life of various societies and nations. Practically all religions of the world have their own "holy places", i.e. sanctuaries. A sanctuary is a sacred place, a place filled with sacrum. In Roman Catholic church by a sanctuary one understands "a church or another sacred place which, with the consent of a local ordinary, is the destination of numerous pilgrimages undertaken of religious reasons". While analysing the structure of pilgrimage destinations in Poland one takes into account various criteria. The so-called "horizontal mobility", which is expressed by the territorial range of pilgrimages arriving at certain holy places as well as the so-called "vertical mobility", i.e. the intensity of religious experiences and the vitality of the pilgrimage movement, are usually analysed. Taking into account the above criteria, one can identify pilgrimage centres of an international, nation-wide, multi-regional, regional and local meaning. In Poland, there is only one sanctuary of the international significance, namely Jasna Góra. It is sometimes called the sanctuary of the Polish Nation and "the spiritual capital of Poland". The main nation-wide sanctuaries are: Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Licheń and Niepokalanów. A pilgrimage centre of a multi-regional significance is a sanctuary whose influence covers a large part of the country's territory. The influence of a regional sanctuary is usually limited to a certain region. The Sanctuary of Leżajsk belongs to the latter category. There are significant differences among sanctuaries, both in terms of their range and influence. The popularity of each pilgrimage centre depends on many factors, among others: geographical location, transportation, history, accommodation and boarding, personnel, etc. In religious terms, the main role is played by the elements which create the sacrum of a pilgrimage centre, such as: relics of saints, holy pictures and figures and the places associated with events significant from the point of view of the believers. The Sanctuary of Leżajsk, as compared with other pilgrimage centres in Poland, is characterised by the abundance of cult and religion elements. The picture of the Madonna of Consolation is the central object of cult. However, the faithful come there for various reasons: to take part in the Holy Mass or in the Way of Cross, to pray before the cross called the Passion of Christ, placed just behind the main altar, or before the pictures of other saints. From the very beginning of its existence the sanctuary played an important religious and social role. It has been an important centre of religious life. Each year about 300,000 to 500,000 people visit this religious centre. Some of them come individually, others with groups of pilgrims. The faithful from neighbouring parishes traditionally pilgrimize to Leżajsk on foot. It is a tradition in many families to pilgrimize to the sanctuary in connection with important life events. Moreover, the Sanctuary of Leżajsk plays an important social and cultural role. Due to the excellent acoustic conditions, concerts and other cultural events are often held in the sanctuary. Numerous symposium, scientific sessions and lectures are often held in the centre. The sanctuary actively participates in local social events and initiates various actions on behalf of the local community. Many charity actions aimed at helping the poor are worth stressing. The Sanctuary of Leżajsk, due to a particular spiritual climate it creates, has a strong influence upon believers who perceive it as an important religious centre of a significant social function. Scientific analyses based on facts fully confirm this opinion.
