The concept of Our Lady's slavery according to St Louis Grignon de Montfort. An anachronism or a challenge and opportunity for modern man?

Summary: In the rich spiritual experience of the Church there is a widespread practice of devotion of oneself to the Virgin Mary. A brief panorama of spiritual roads experienced with the Virgin Mary will allow us to place this form of veneration in the historical and theological context. The first man to use the expression to "devote oneself" was St. John Damascene. The idea of devotion to the Virgin Mary went though various phases and stages of evolution and change to assume, by the end of 17th century, the wording saying about slavery. It is this form of the veneration of the Virgin Mary that won the greatest popularity. The veneration of the Virgin Mary was first mentioned in the Franciscan monastery of Alcala (Spain). Around 1595 the "Brotherhood of Slaves of the Holy Virgin" was established there. In the Polish literature related to the cult of the Virgin Mary in the first half of 19th century two books were published by the Polish Jesuits, which propagated the ideas of the Marian slavery. However, the most famous advocate of this idea was St. Louis Grignion de Montfort. The Polish follower of his thought was the blessed Honorat Koźmiński, founder of numerous unfrocking monastic families which upon his recommendation accepted in their spirituality the idea of Marian slavery, living up to it and spreading it among others. The congregation of the Daughters of Immaculate Virgin Mary was obliged by Koźmiński to live up to this idea by putting it in the legal regulations governing the life of this community. The religious act of devotion of oneself to the Virgin Mary consists in devoting oneself and one's whole mundane life to the Virgin Mary. The essence of the Marian slavery is the virtue of submission and humility towards the Virgin Mary. The idea of slavery is still alive today and it has such great heralds as Saint Maksymilian Kolbe, cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and Pope John Paul II.
