Summary: This article is an overview of the present-day state of research into recreation and tourism in the suburban zones of Poland's biggest cities: Warszawa, Łódź, Kraków, Wrocław, Poznań, the so-called Tri-City (Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia) as well as the Upper Silesia conurbation. The author of the article refers to literature dealing both with sociological research concerning leisure and spending leisure time for recreational and tourist purposes, as well as an examination of tourist flow. These issues are discussed in the general section of the article concerning the matters relevant for Poland as a whole and in the detailed section referring to particular urban agglomerations.
