Summary: The basis of the climatic assessment of the water resources of a given area should be formed by an index accounting for real precipitation and evaporation, i.e. the climatic water balance. In this paper, an attempt has been made at developing a method for determining the total evaporation, a basic element of the climatic water balance. The method is based on easily accessible meteorological data, can be verified in the natural conditions of the Polish Carpathians, and is simple, easy, and potentially capable of generating reliable results. Spatial representation of the results so generated was another objective of this study. This goal was accomplished through the use of the cartographic presentation, in the form of the 1:300 000 scale maps of semi-annual and monthly sums of the index of total evaporation and climatic water balance, for the western part of the Polish Carpathians.
