Routes from Europe to the Holy Land described in John Mandeville's Relation

Summary: John Mandeville, a knight from St. Alban in England, was the author of one of the most popular description of the Holy Land in the turn of the Middle Ages. In his book, known as 'Travels of Sir John Mandeville' he described journeys to Palestina, Africa, Asia and other parts of the world as his own adventures. The book was considered a great success and during the centuries the manuscript was copied, translated (even in the Middle Ages) and reprinted in several editions. The oldest known copy dated to the year 1371 is now in the National Library in Paris. According to the G. F. Werner's opinion there are about 300 medieval copies of this manuscript. There were, however, conflicting opinions as to the authenticity of his descriptions, and it was said that they were compiled from various, earlier, travel books. The outstanding popularity of Mandeville's ralation made us to treat it as a one the most important sources of knowledge about the Holy Land in the late Middle Ages.
