"Icon Route" in the Carpathian Euroregion (An Outline of a Concept)

Summary: On the base of actual trends, both of the domestic and international tourism and a valuation of the tourist resources of Sanok and its region, the author treats a signi-ficant icon collection as the main factor of the tourist development of the city. To give to it an upper rank and a wider scope, the icons should be presented not only in the museum but also in situ, along the suggested 'Icon Route', connected with the collection and consisted of the existing churches of the Greek-Catholic rite. The 'Route' was traced in three scales - local, regional and international ones. The international variants are based on a fact, that the old churches of this type are found also in Slovakia and Ukraine, in the regions similar to that of Sanok and being fragments of the Carpathian Euroregion, declared in 1992. 'The Icon Route' can therefore become the element of the Euroregion structure and be a considerable axis of its tourist development. Moreover, as the 'Route' passes through the areas of traditional contacts and mixing of cultures, connected with the Latin Church and the Eastern Church, where dramatic events occured during the last World War and after, it can get the rank of the European Cultural Route. The concept of the 'Icon Route' appeared during searching for future orientations of the tourist development of the City of Sanok (D. Ptaszycka-Jackowska, 1994). His connected with other European cultural routes. Basic premises of this concept are: a necessity of the finding of main factor of the tourist development in Sanok and an existence in this city (in the local Historic Museum) of a magnificent icon collection, consisted of some 700 pieces, made between the 14th and the 19th c.
