Agreement between towns and communes on Poland`s religious sites

Summary: The author, who is Mayor of Częstochowa, presented his idea to set up a pact between the local authorities of all the places in Poland where there are important religious centres. Studies by Professor Jackowski show that there are about 500 such places in the country with a supra-local significance. One of the major objectives of these local authorities is to provide the best possible conditions of service for the needs of mass and individual religious tourism. The creation of a pact envisaged to assist in these specific requirements will undoubtedly stimulate progress in this field. The pact should fulfil an integrative role, encouraging the member authorities to participate in joint enterprises for promotion, information, and provision of transportation and access. At the same time the association should pursue a common policy regarding the presentation and dissemination of opinion on questions concerning the reception and provision of services for pilgrims and religious tourists. The historic experience of Częstochowa in this field, which has certainly merited its reputation as Poland's spiritual capital, confirms the immediate need for such a joint undertaking. According to the author the basic objectives of the pact should be: - the compilation of a joint plan for the development trends to be pursued inreligious tourism adapted to contemporary needs, - the exchange of experience in the field of services for tourists and pilgrims at a pilgrimage centre, - the establishment of conditions favouring the widescale dissemination of information and promotion of the religious centres, and - the maintenance of a united policy with respect to the nationalgovernment and administrative authorities. The mutual activities envisaged include: - the organisation of joint academic seminars and conferences, - the publication of a joint information handbook on the Polish religious centres, and - the presentation of joint expositions at tourist fairs in Poland and abroad.
