The Centre of Religious Worship at Wambierzyce

Summary: The centre of religious worship at Wambierzyce, a small place in the region of Kłodzko (Silesia), at the foot of the Góry Stołowe (Table Mountains). The beginnings of this cult are not very well documented. According to the 17th-century tradition, in the 12th century the Madonna and Child are said to have appeared to the founder of the castle at Ratno Dolne. The first wooden church was erected on the spot in the 13th century. The statue of the Virgin and Child which had hung on a linden tree up to that time was transferred into the church. In the local history the year 1651 is considered to mark the revival of Wambierzyce's importance as a pilgrimage centre, the "residence of Mary in the region of Kłodzko". At the close of the 17th century there was a substantial rise in the flow of pilgrims, brought about by dramatic events in June 1678 and May 1679. 1677 marks a turning-point in the history of Wambierzyce, when Daniel P. von Osterberg became master of the estate and patron of the new church, built in 1695-1710. A collection of calvary chapels was erected on the surrounding hillsides in 1681-1708. In 1936 Pope Pius XI elevated Wambierzyce Church to the rank of a basilica minor. An important event in Wambierzyce's postwar history was the coronation ceremony of the statue of Our Lady of Wambierzyce, on 17th August 1980. Wambierzyce receives its greatest numbers of pilgrims on three major feasts: the Visitation of the B.V.M. (May 31st), the Assumption (15th August).
