Z badań nad współczesnymi problemami demogeograficznymi Ukrainy i Polski Research on contemporary demographic problems in Ukraine and Poland Summary: The article presents certain demographic problems of the two neighbouring countries, Ukraine and Poland. It is an attempt to show the similarities and differences between the two countries. In Ukraine, the depopulation process started earlier, and occurs faster than in Poland, so ca. 2050 the population number in both countries will be similar. This is indicated by the similarity of age structure for the particular age groups of people born after World War II. These processes are accompanied by the fast ageing of population, yet in Ukraine the rural areas are older than urban areas, while in Poland we observe a reverse situation. Population in Poland is distributed more equally than in Ukraine. The latter is characterised by dense population of peripheral regions in the west and in the east, with a population desert in the centre of the country (with exception of Kiev). The present spatial population structure will not undergo a definite change in the future, although in Ukraine one may expect increasing regional contrasts. Kortus B.
