Population problems of the Katowice region in the context of national socio-demographic transformations

Summary: The analysis of population transformations in the Katowice region observed in the recent years allows for formulating the following conclusions. First, both in the region and in the national scale, the character in the transformations is similar. It refers to the decreasing dynamics of employment, depopulation, or the negative migration balance. These tendencies are most visible in large cities. Simultaneously, centers inhabited by fewer than 25 thousand people show positive features of transformation, often for the first time in many years. Second, according to the demographic forecast for the Katowice voivodeship prepared for the former administration district, and for its present shape, until 2020, no significant population growth is to be expected. Only ca. 2005 we shall observe a larger dynamics reflecting the natural growth in 1980s (Kłosowski, Runge 1999b). Third, a higher uniformity of population transformations is to be expected, while areas of higher indices in this aspect shall be situated in the south of the region. Undoubtedly, the most significant quality change in the processes discussed will concern the stabilization or demographic regress of the largest cities in the voivodeship (Kłosowski, Runge 1999a).
