Róžant - the Pilgrim Centre of Lusatia

Summary: At the time of the Reformation, 90% of the Lusatian population accepted the Lutheran faith. Only the residents of a small enclave north-east of Budyšin (Bautzen) remained Catholic. Nowadays the area is inhabited by about 13-15,000 Catholics declaring Lusatian nationality and a similar number of their German co-religionists. The religious centre of the "Catholic Lusatia" is Cistercian nuns’ convent Marijina Hwth century. Although the sanctuary thrived most in the Counter-reformation period, it is still very popular nowadays. For many years the pilgrims were almost exclusively Lusatian Sorbs, but after World War II, also German-speaking Catholics started visiting Róžant. Religious celebrations are also a great tourist attraction of Róžant, as a large number of Lusatian pilgrims taking part in them wear their traditional, very picturesque national dress. Owing to the location of the sanctuary, close to Germany’s borders with Poland and the Czech Republic, the recent years have brought an increase in the number of pilgrims and tourists from these countries.
