The religious sanctuary in the local and social context

Summary: Sanctuaries are important elements for the communities. Analyses focus on relations of the sacred sites to the socio-cultural environment. Obviously such centres of religious worship undertake strictly religious activity along with more secular ones. In particular, the integrating role of sanctuaries should be stressed, as they attract people from smaller or larger territories depending on the type of sanctuary. Usually they also play an important role of centres of the cultural and social life. Therefore the sanctuary is connected with the local community and actively contributed in the creation of its heterogeneity, shaping it in various ways, in the strictly religious dimension, as well as socio-cultural, economic and even environmental aspects. Sacred sites, by undertaking religious, cultural, social, economic and environmental activities promote the development of individuals, societies and a wider environment (cultural, social and natural). Analyses confirm important roles of sanctuaries in many dimensions. Considering this, on the one hand they should undertake cooperation with various institutions and community organisations (local governments, education establishments, culture centres), while on the other public institutions (government bodies, territorial government authorities, cultural and business organisations etc.) should see the positive role of sanctuaries in the shaping of the civil dimensions of human life and cooperate with them to the benefit of the community.
