Sianowo as a pilgrimage centre in Kashubian Lake District
Summary: The centres of religious worship and pilgrimages to them are very common, because they had been continuing for ages and occur on all the continents and in all religions. Pilgrimages appertain to the phenomena of over-confessional and timeless features. The special attention should be paid to the fact that the places of religious cult have always been an important factor of the civilization development. They assisted in consolidation of local societies with remaining a little distinguished in the area of culture, traditions and so on. So it can be assumed that the influence of religious worship centres is very diversified. At the background of generally drawn problems, this paper is devoted to the sanctuary of Virgin Mary, the Queen of Kashubians in Sianowo. It gives a short review of history of the sanctuary, development of pilgrimage movements and fateful days in the history of Sianowo, connected with the worship of famous for its favors figure of Virgin Mary of Sianowo. It also discusses modern forms of pilgrimages and visiting sanctuary by the pilgrims. It should be pointed out, that the first historically documented note about Sianowo dates back to 1348, and in 1388 the borders of Sianowo parish were marked. It can be quite amazing that not far from another church, in the area of small population, in Mirachowo a new parish was established, and the church was built, and when it was damaged it had been continuously repaired or built up. Among different motives explaining the fact, the most important seems to be the famous for its favors and being a subject of religious worship a figure of Virgin Mary with Infant Christ in her arms, for which the sanctuary was created. The statue of Virgin Mary with Infant Christ was a central object, which had a significant influence on the fate of the town and all the area. All the changes in the parish were closely connected with the cult of Sianowo Virgin Mary. It should be pointed out, that the beginning of the cult and origin of the figure as well as its relations to Sianowo, the parish, are as it usually happens with "miraculous" places covered with many unknowns, which were preserved in tradition. It is difficult nowadays to distinguish between the facts and the legends. The expression of reverence of Kashubians to their Lady can be numerous prayers and found on the primitia pictures summons to Virgin Mary of Sianowo. The most solemn moment in the tradition of the cult was coronation of Sianowo Mary for the Queen of Kashubians on 4th September 1966. The ceremony gathered over 20 thousands of worshippers. The reverence paid to the Queen of Kashubians was known also to the Pope John Paul II. During the meeting on Kościuszko Square in Gdynia in 1987 the Pope said "All of you, your families and your troubles I put to the feet of Christ's Mother, hallowed in many sanctuaries of this land, and especially in Sianowo". The biggest manifest of devotion to the Queen of Kashubians are indulgences, held there twice a year. Famous for its favors figure gains special hallow on the occasion of indulgence of Virgin Mary of Scapular, which is held annually on the first Sunday after the 16th July and on the indulgence of the Virgin Mary's birth, that is celebrated on the first Sunday after 8th September. The indulgence ceremonies gather worshippers from all middle Kashubians District, who among their different daily activities come to Sianowo to develop their spiritual life in the atmosphere of religious arousal. In 2000, Kashubian and Pomeranian Association departments took active part in organizing the indulgence and pilgrimages, they mobilized chapels and folk groups. More and more frequently the Queen of Kashubian becomes also the inspiration for folk artists, for example those making religious sculptures. It must be pointed out that in the pace of direct examinations in this area it was discovered that the spatial scope of pilgrims visiting the Queen of Kashubians broadens More and more often the pilgrims come even from distant regions of the country, from Szczecin, Warsaw, and also from abroad. the research show that the 44% of all pilgrims come to the sanctuary in Sianowo in organized groups. Considering the source of inspiration to pilgrimage, about 45% of people being asked admitted that it comes from the need of heart, as a internal need of prayer survival (fig. 4). The results of the research show that in the pilgrimages participate members of all social groups and different ages. Inhabitants of little towns as well as big city agglomerations. 41% od pilgrims being asked came from the age group below 20 years, 34% was between 20 and 30 years of age and 10% came in the group of the age between 30 and 40. Both among men and women, the most numerous was the group of people with secondary education, the second group was formed by those of primary education. The main motive of pilgrimage to the sanctuary in Sianowo is connected with their spiritual needs. They can be realized through the certain collection of values. If the person realizes the need and knows that the pilgrimage can fulfill it, then the motive of pilgrimage appears. The Queen of Kashubians is a lively source of faith. The sanctuary is visited by youth, graduates of primary schools, children of Holy Communion, groups of communities, people in love and engaged couples. Lady of Sianowo is an inspiration for folk creators, as well as for the writers that had created many beautiful pieces of poetry being a sign of devotion to the Virgin Mary.
