The Shrine of Our Lady of Rosary in Andacollo (Chile)

Summary: The article presents the shrine of the Holy Virgin Mary in Andacollo, Chile. It begins by providing brief information on the region in the Andes, which is rich in precious minerals, and of the small mining town with a population of 10,000. It was founded in the Incan era. The beginnings of the pilgrimage centre date back to the mid-16th century. The first icon of the Virgin Mary was brought here at the time from La Serena (today a renowned academic centre). The Virgin Mary is venerated here as the Queen of the Holy Rosary. The present figure of the Virgin Mary was made in Lima and enthroned in 1676. In 1901, the coronation of the figure took place. In 1987, Pope John Paul II visited the site on one of his pilgrimages. The shrine consists of an old colonial-style basilica, founded in 1772, containing the miracle-working statue, and a small new basilica in the Roman-Byzantine style, which was consecrated in 1893. There is also an interesting museum featuring numerous mementoes of the region's history and documentation of the worship of the Holy Virgin. The shrine is of supra-regional significance. The Way of the Rosary winds up to the shrine, which is situated more than 1,000 m a.s.l. Andacollo is also famous for its religious dances.
