Moje spotkania z Ojcem Świętym Janem Pawłem II

My meetings with the Holy Father, John Paul II

Summary: The author recalls seven of his meetings with the Holy Father, John Paul II. He precedes this by first mentioning the historic visit of John Paul II to the Jagiellonian University in 1983. The Pope received an honorary doctorate from all the departments of the University. At the time, the author was part of a group of several hundred people who were permitted to enter the court of the Collegium Maius where the Holy Father was to speak from the arcade. He ends with a recollection of the funeral of John Paul II. The author attended the sad event with a number of other rectors of Polish universities.
The main part of the article recalls private meetings with the Pope. The first meeting took place in 1996. The author, a University prorector at the time, was given the honor of leading a group of 16 Polish professors who were invited by John Paul II to attend a scientific conference at Castel Gandolfo in Italy dedicated to the issue of the spiritual condition of Slavs. The last meeting took place in October of 2003. The author presented the Holy Father in Saint Peter's Square with a commemorative book on the 25th anniversary of his Pontificate.
He writes about his meetings with the Holy Father, which took place in Kraków and Rome. He recalls John Paul II's unforgettable pilgrimage to Poland in June of 1997 when the Pope met representatives of the Polish academic community at Saint Anne's Church in Kraków. He writes about the historical dimension of the Holy Father's visit to the Jagiellonian University's new campus called the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Jagiellonian University. He also recalls a number of his trips to Rome including one with a Jagiellonian University delegation (September 11, 2000), one with a group of close to 100 Polish rectors (August, 2001), one associated with the canonization celebration for former UJ Rector Józef Sebastian Pelczar (May, 2003), and finally the 25th anniversary celebration mentioned earlier. Each of the meetings recalled became etched in the heart and the mind of the author in a different way. Each one, however, represents a priceless treasure received by the author, perhaps undeservingly, from Fate.
