Structure of radiation balance in urban and rural areas: measurement system and selected results in the Silesia-Kraków Upland

Summary: Precise measurements are needed in order to determine the structure of radiation balance for particular surfaces and spatial differentiation of the radiation balance of urban and rural active surface. Such measurements were carried out with automatic meteorological stations equipped with Kipp&Zonen's CNR1 radiation sensors set. Proper location of the measuring equipment and the applied method of the radiation streams' calculation enabled identification of the daily courses and magnitudes of particular elements in the radiation balance. Due to such meteorological stations and the CNR1 sensors' set, the radiation structure for the urban and rural areas as well as for the areas transformed by anthropogenic processes in the Katowice region were identified. The radiation balance was influenced by intensively varied morphology of the carst valleys in the Ojców National Park. During a sunny summer day, the deep Prądnik Valley is reached by even 3.7 MJˇm-2 less radiation energy than an exposed plateau. Since 2000, the set of CNR1 sensors for measurement of the radiation balance elements has functioned properly at the meteorological station situated next to the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Silesia, and since 2007 at two other meteorological stations located within the Ojców National Park.
