Lithological discontinuities in the soil catena of Góra Zamkowa at Lanckorona (Wieliczka Foothills, Southern Poland)

Summary: The paper presents preliminary results of studies on the diversity and pedogenetic role of slope deposits (cover-beds) in a flysch catena located in the Wieliczka Foothills (Fig. 1), where no such research has been conducted so far. The investigated soils are located in slope sections with varying lithology and gradient (Fig. 2) and represent the Cambisol reference group, according to the WRB system (IUSS Working Group 2007). Their basic properties are included in Table 1. Table 2 presents data on soil texture whereas selected ratios aimed to test the existence of lithological discontinuities are included in Table 3. Lithological discontinuities occur in all the investigated profiles, though they are best expressed in the lower section of the catena. The discontinuities are manifested by abrupt changes of soil texture, relative changes of 20% or more in the ratios between sand fractions, relative changes of at least 20% in the relative contribution of main fractions calculated on clay-free basis, abrupt changes in soil colour and differences in the lithology of rock fragments. These phenomena cannot be explained by the action of soil-forming processes and result from the action of solifluction, slope wash and eolian deposition. It is possible to conclude that cover-beds play an important role in the shaping of soil properties, being the sole parent material of soil in the lower part of the catena.
