Summary: In the paper a suggestion to introduce a conception of heat periods besides heat waves is presented. A heat wave is series of at least 3 days with the maximum air temperature above 30oC during each day; a heat period is a series of at least 3 days with the average maximum temperature 30oC or higher. Heat waves and heat periods in Warsaw within the period 1951-2009 were counted. The softer distinguishing criterion of heat periods causes that they include much more (nearly 60% of all) heat days than the heat waves. The number and total duration time (or average duration) of heat periods well describe the occurring changes: the occurrence of more frequent and longer heat periods in individual years not an increased number of years with heat periods.
