Sacred sites and their spatial context

Summary: It is often necessary to take a moment and reflect upon ongoing spatial changes. Designers and decision-makers often resort to antropological and sociological approaches to spatial issues. The driving principle behind all creative efforts ought to be personalization or the consideration of human needs in the design process. Creative work should be based on an acceptance of life and a positive view of the natural world (flora and fauna). Ecological issues should be given due respect. It is necessary to become more aware of the relationship between man and the environment. Individuals create their own life space and this life space affects society in the form of culture. A humanistic approach to one's environment and life space should be based on the respect for human needs including religious needs, which ought to be satisfied in harmony with the natural environment. Objectively speaking, individuals seek transcendental points of reference, which is manifested in the creation of religious sites that play important social and cultural roles. Christianity is characterized by an affirmation of the world and of man. Cultural heritage ought to be treated with respect because it transmits values important for individuals' cultural identity. The natural environment also deserves respect and care, as it is an inherent element of human life. For religious individuals, the natural environment is a fascinating work of the Creator. A designer should be able to reconcile respect for the environment with human needs. In the event of conflicting interests, the recommendations of competent experts should be taken into account. The same way that a physician must sometimes remove sick tissue to save a patient, a designer must make responsible decisions that will affect society and nature. Architecture and nature ought to be treated as equivalent in terms of their importance to the human environment.
