Sanctuaries of South Podlasie - their history and role in the multidenominational region

Summary: The paper focuses on four sanctuaries: Kodeń, Jabłeczna, Pratulin, and Kostomłoty. All four are located in the northern part of Lublin Province called the region of South Podlasie. Due to its rich history and location near the Polish border, Podlasie has always been an example of the coexistence of various nations and religions. Today, a number of sacred sites serve as distinguishing symbols of this multicultural region. The sanctuaries in question represent three main Christian faiths present in Podlasie: Catholicism, the Russian Orthodox faith, and the Uniate faith. Each sanctuary is unique in its own way: miraculous paintings, icons, and relics of martyrs. Throughout the ages, all four sanctuaries have witnessed numerous painful events that had taken place in the region. Each one has played a significant role in the history of the region. Above all, the four sacred sites have always been very important to the inhabitants of the Podlasie region. There are several reasons for this. All four sites serve as major pilgrimage centers that attract and consolidate believers of different faiths. Hundreds of pilgrims gather for joint prayers and masses on religious feasts. In addition to serving as major religious centers, the four sanctuaries have assumed other types of social, political, cultural, educational, and recreational functions. While such secular pursuits can mean different things to different people, they have helped the sanctuaries "grow their brand".
