The sacred landscape of the Greek island of Thasos

Summary: The paper describes the environment as well as the historical and political events that have shaped the contemporary "sacred landscape" of Thasos (Thassos). Thasos Island is located in the northern Aegean Sea. It is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece called Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (prefecture of Kavala). Thasos is located as far as 7 km from the mainland and is one of the northernmost of Greek islands. The term "sacred landscape" refers to the common location of monasteries, churches, and other centers of worship. The island of Thasos is a good example of how various factors can alter a sacred landscape. The best conditions for settlement expansion and subsequent construction of new church buildings exist primarily due to favorable natural conditions for development, namely coastal lowlands and mountain valleys. In the past, however, the risk of enemy attacks caused local residents to move their homes inland. Hence, the oldest churches and monasteries are located inland.
