Czy św. Franciszek z Asyżu odbył pielgrzymkę do Jerozolimy? Did Saint Francis make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem? Summary: According to testimony from the 14th and 15th centuries, St. Francis visited Jerusalem and other holy places during his journey to the Holy Land. We know that the Seraphic Father spent several months - probably from late summer of 1219 till the summer of 1220 - in Outremer. Unfortunately, we cannot find any information about his pilgrimage to Bethlehem or Jerusalem in the most valuable of sources from the 13th century. Thomas of Celano and St. Bonaventura, authors of official biographies of St. Francis approved by the authorities of the Franciscan Order, did not mention any such episode in his life. In the Middle Ages, a pilgrimage to Jerusalem was a highly prized religious practice. Hence, the only one reason why both authors would not have mentioned St. Francis' pilgrimage is that he had not made such a pilgrimage. It is possible that stories about his pious visit to the Holy Land were merely the creation of late medieval authors. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Franciscans were the only representatives of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land. Their mission would be hardly possible without European pilgrims.
