Kult św. Maksymiliana Marii Kolbego w Polsce Devotion to St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe in Poland Summary: St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe is one of the best known saints in the Catholic Church. August 14, 2011 is the 70th anniversary of his death as a martyr in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. The Senate of the Republic of Poland issued a decision on October 21, 2010, making the year 2011 the Year of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe was beatified on October 17, 1971 and canonized on October 10, 1982, which contributed to his status as a key martyr in Polish culture as well as abroad. There are 170 Roman Catholic parishes in Poland named after him. More than half of the parishes (57%) came into existence between 1983 and 2000, which may be attributed to the steady growth of the devotion to St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe following his canonization. Another 42% came into existence prior to 1983. The Małopolska region possesses the largest number of parishes named after St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe. Other areas of concentration include the Płock region, the Bydgoszcz region and the region of the Great Masurian Lakes. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe is the patron saint of four Roman Catholic dioceses in Poland: Bielsko-Żywiec, Elbląg, Gdańsk and Koszalin-Kołobrzeg. On May 22, 1999, the Congregation for the Devotion to God and Sacramental Discipline announced St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe to be the patron saint of Honorary Blood Donors in Poland. He is also the patron saint of the cities of Zduńska Wola, Pabianice and Oświęcim as well as the patron saint of the Society of Catholic Journalists in Warsaw. The paper describes the most important centers of devotion to St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe in Poland. Special attention is paid to sites in Zduńska Wola, Pabianice, Niepokalanów, Szczuki, Gdynia and Oświęcim. Finally, the paper looks at pilgrim traffic to selected sites associated with St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe and the overall distribution of parishes named after him.
