Effect of pressure systems on increases in snowfall recorded at selected sites in Europe

Zarys treści: The aim of this paper is to analyze long-term changes in snow cover accumulation and determine synoptic situations causing the occurrence of snowfall in selected regions of Europe. The research study was conducted at three sites: Belgrade (Serbia), Suwałki (Poland), Ubachsberg (Holland). The three sites are located far away from each other and represent regions with different climate conditions in the winter. Daily snow depth data were used from two research sites covering 30 winter seasons from 1980/1981 to 2009/2010 as well as 24 seasons from 1980/1981 to 2003/2004 for the Belgrade site. Source material was obtained from the European Climate Assessment and Institute of Meteorology as well as the National Water Management Research Institute in Poland. In the analyzed period, with the exception of the Ubachsberg site, snowfall occurred in every winter season. The lowest variability in the number of days with snow depth increases was noted for the Suwałki site, while the highest variability was noted for the Ubachsberg site. A typical feature of synoptic situations causing snowfall at the three research sites was the occurrence of negative pressure at sea level and a reduction of the height of the isobaric area (500 hPa). This indicated the presence of a low pressure system.
