Water and wastewater management in the city of Toruń

Summary: The paper describes the evolution of water and wastewater management practices and facilities in the city of Toruń. The main focus is on the socio-economic transition since 1990, but earlier stages of development are also discussed. The sewer system in the city has expanded significantly in the last 20 years including new pipelines (357.9 km) and overall system expansions (382.5 km). The number of homes with access to the sewer system has increased, as has availability of municipal water and wastewater services. Over 95% of the city's population is served by the municipal water network, while 93% uses the municipal sewerage network. Municipal water consumption and wastewater production have both decreased significantly in the study period. Key reasons for this reduction include the decline of water-consuming industries and the introduction of modern water meters in residential areas. Moreover, extensive work has been carried out to modernize local water and sewer facilities. The most important work included the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and the upgrading of water supplies, including the largest facility on the Drwęca River.
