Causes and course of flood in the Czarna catchment (Wisłoka basin) in June 2009 and its record in residents' memory

Summary: The aim of the authors was a hydrometeorological interpretation of the overflow of water that occurred in the Czarna catchment on the night of June 26-27, 2009 and revealing the image of this flood in the memory of residents 5 years after its occurrence. In the Czarna catchment, the strongest precipitation occurred on June 26 and was related to the development of two quasi-stationary low-pressure areas right outside the southern borders of Poland. They caused the inflow of warm and humid tropical air masses from the east. Forced convection, adiabatic cooling and storm clouds were observed along the weather front that was moving parallel to the edge of the Carpathian Mts. The Czarna catchment basin was one of the areas with the highest rainfall, reaching 70 mm. The maximum discharge of the Czarna river at Głowaczów, triggered by such intense precipitation, amounted to 94.6 m3.s-1. The images of the inhabitants of the Czarna village about the extent of the flood clearly differ from its real extent. This is especially visible in the western part of the surveyed area - some respondents "expand" the extent of flood waters there, some "reduce" it, while others are not able to designate it at all. However, most of the respondents remember well the flooding around the bridge, important for the community as it connects the southern and northern parts of the village. The significance of this structure during the flood has manifested also during interviews with the inhabitants of the Czarna village affected by the flood.
