Under the city walls. Lithological description of a medieval city of Poznan development in sediments on both sides of the walls at the Water Gate area

Summary: Example of the most significant and most beautiful buildings in the medieval city of Poznan were the city walls. Surrounded by a moat, city walls were a measure of the city status and testified about its power until modern times. As a result of ravages and neglect those walls were demolished in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the moat was filled up. Nowadays, we can admire this fortification only in old engravings and city plans. But small fragments of the walls and one bastion have been preserved. To explore the layers and sediments associated with the city's beginnings, the author has made 13 geological drillings in the eastern portion of the Kolegiacki Square, in the Water Gate area. The method used in the research allowed her to recognize two series of sediments, differ in the sedimentation environment. The substrate of this area is mainly sandy, which builds the second level of the Warta terrace system and the roof is built of sediments with anthropogenic origin, considerably thick, with artefacts (fragments of bones, vessels and chains).
