The research of Professor Karol Bromek in geography of transport and services

Summary: Research on the geography of transportation and services is an important part of the scientific achievements of Professor Karol Bromek. Although studies in this field sum up only to about 8% of his scientific research, they are relevant also today thanks to their reference to important international literature items and innovative character. Karol Bromek's studies in transportation geography cover a variety of subjects. In his Ph.D. thesis from 1948 about the railway isochrones of Poland, Professor Bromek analyzed the problem of time accessibility to rail transportation in the country. His book about transportation geography published in 1951 had a popular science character and presented a more generalized view of several important transportation problems. The second period of Karol Bromek's research in transportation geography were the 1960s when he studied the problem of freight transportation flows on the examples of southern Poland and the city of Rzeszów. He continued this research in an article about the economic regionalization of southern Poland in the context of freight flows, which he published with J. Warszyńska. In the field of the geography of services, Karol Bromek published an article about the hierarchy of service centers in Kraków Voivodeship (1947) in which as one of the first Polish geographers he referred to the central place theory of Walter Christaller. Although the study was mainly theoretical, it included several key suggestions for regional planning. Most of the towns and cities in Kraków Voivodeship which Karol Bromek defined as important indeed managed to gain in importance in the settlement hierarchy of the region over the next 50 years.
