The spatial dimension of political cleavages in Poland in the years 1990?-?2005
Summary: The main aim of this paper is to analyze the spatial dimension of political cleavages in Poland in the years 1990-2005. In this period of time, the existence of two fundamental axes of conflict on the Polish political scene can be observed. The axis of values is a confrontation between the post-communist left-wing parties and the anti-communist right-wing parties. This dimension is strongly correlated with the level of religiosity. The axis of interests, on the other hand, is a conflict between liberal parties representing the free market electorate and so-called peasant parties representing supporters of government intervention in the economy along with a greater redistribution of income in society. The axis of interests is highly correlated with the level of urbanization, industrialization, income, and education. The geography of the axis of values is a result of the political partition of Poland by neighboring countries in the late 18th century as well as changes in Polish borders after World War II. Left-wing parties (e.g. Democratic Left Alliance, Polish Social Democracy) achieve their best electoral results in the strongly secularized western and northern parts of Poland, while right-wing parties (e.g. Center Alliance, Catholic Coalition Fatherland, Solidarity Electoral Action) gain the highest support in the conservative former Austrian region of Poland. The geography of the axis of interests has its roots in spatial differences of the level of socio-economic development. Electoral support for liberal parties (e.g. Democratic Union, Liberal Democratic Congress, Freedom Union) is highest in the most advanced urban and suburban areas of Poland, and especially in large metropolitan areas, whereas so-called peasant parties or farmers' parties (e.g. Polish Peasant Party, Self-Defense) achieve their best electoral results in the least developed rural areas of the country. On a regional scale, relations between the four political options depend on the level of religiosity of rural areas of particular regions. In the Western and Northern parts of Poland and the former Prussian and Russian occupation zones, where rural areas are strongly secularized, a similar spatial distribution of support for right-wing and liberal parties on the one hand, and for left-wing and peasant parties on the other hand can be observed. In the former Austrian occupation zone, where rural areas are characterized by a high level of religiosity, the spatial pattern of voting is analogous for left-wing and liberal parties as well as for right-wing and peasant parties. On an intra-urban scale, liberal and left-wing parties follow a similar spatial pattern of support, 7which is also the case for right-wing and peasant parties. Liberal and left-wing parties receive most of their electoral support in the urban centers dominated by better educated and wealthier voters, while right-wing and peasant parties win most of their votes in peripheral areas inhabited by relatively less educated and less affluent voters.
